Got a Noisy Muffler? Inspect the Exhaust System!
Not many drivers give much thought about their vehicle’s exhaust system until the muffler starts to make a lot of noise. By then, a problem has developed. Some drivers don’t understand that the work of the exhaust system is to do more than keep your car quiet.
Its primary functions include:
- Routes toxic fumes away from the passenger cabin,
- Helps your engine run properly,
- Maintains optimum fuel efficiency, and
- Reduces polluting emissions.
The most common problem that develops in the exhaust system is a leak of the toxic fumes and gases. Delaying a needed repair can make it cost more because continuing to drive with an exhaust leak or bad catalytic converter can damage other things in your vehicle's operating system.
Be on guard if you notice any of the signs below:
- Catalytic converter -- A failing catalytic converter may sound like someone shaking a box of rocks when your vehicle is idling in park or if you’re stopped in traffic. The catalytic converter is prone to theft by scrap metal thieves. If it has been stolen, you'll immediately notice a loud sound and altered vehicle performance.
- Exhaust leak -- Because the muffler is mounted on the underside of your car, it is exposed to a lot of road conditions that can cause it to break down and rust over time, as well as just normal wear and tear.
- Rust -- When you only take your car for short drives, the water vapor produced by the catalytic convertor does not have a chance to get expelled. So, it condenses back into water, resulting in rust. Sulfur is another by-product of engine emissions. If it mixes with water left in the exhaust system, it can form a corrosive acid that will eat away at the exhaust system.
Note to Remember: Prevent more extensive and costly damage to your vehicle. Before heading out on your summer road trip, be sure to have an inspection of the muffler along with the other operating systems of your vehicle.
