When your mechanic starts describing the possible auto service needed for your vehicle, you may get a little concerned about the time and cost involved. Don’t be afraid to ask your mechanic these four questions before any work is started on your vehicle:

  • What is included in each auto service?
  • How long will my vehicle be in the auto shop?
  • How much will the work cost?
  • Does the auto shop offer a warranty on the work performed?

Here are a few common auto service items that every vehicle owner should understand:

  • “Oil change” – It is important that you adhere to the oil change interval recommended for your vehicle as well as what kind of oil is the best for your car to keep it lubricated and cooled with clean oil. Don’t neglect to replace the oil filter too as it will keep the oil clean for longer as it circulates through the engine.
  • “The distributor” – The distributor delivers an electrical voltage to each spark plug. If the timing of the spark is off or if there isn’t enough voltage, you will begin to experience starting problems. But starting problems can also be caused by a bad battery, a failing alternator, or dirty spark plugs. A diagnostic test can pinpoint the exact cause of your starting problems.
  • “Brake fluid” – Your mechanic should check the brake fluid at every oil change to make sure it remains pressurized. This pressurized fluid squeezes the brake pads around the rotors, which in turn slows and stops your car when you step on the brake pedal.
  • “Coolant in the radiator” – The radiator contains a mixture of coolant and water which circulates through the engine to keep it from overheating. It then returns back to the radiator to be cooled off again before circulating again.
  • “Tune ups” – In today’s newer vehicle, this is often referred to as the “auto service schedule.” The tune up has four major benefits for your vehicle—it will start easier, the power is increased, fuel economy is increased, and reduce the toxic emissions emitted.
