Have you ever wondered if all the statements you’ve heard in the media about vehicle maintenance are true? Who do you trust for the answers to your questions? The auto repair technicians at your auto shop will be happy to help you determine the truth about car maintenance.

Take a look at the statements below about Vehicle Maintenance and then decide whether they are True or False.

  1. You don’t have to replace motor oil every 3,000 miles. True! With the advancements in synthetic oils, your car can operate thousands of miles over the 3,000-mile mark. Of course, it’s important that you use the synthetic or conventional oil that’s specified in your vehicle owner’s manual, and change it according to the product’s durability schedule. Some exceptions--lots of stop-and-go driving, trailer-towing, or travel through mountainous or dusty areas, 3,000 miles between oil changes is still the best rule to follow.
  2. You have to go to the dealership for maintenance to keep your vehicle’s warranty valid. False! The reality is you can take your vehicle to the auto shop of your choice. Just make sure that the maintenance is performed on the schedule specified in the owner’s manual and that you keep records of the work done.
  3. Inflate tires to the pressure shown on the tire’s sidewall. False! Many drivers don’t realize that the psi figure on the side of the tire is the maximum pressure the tire will hold safely. The recommended psi that balances braking, handling, gas mileage, and rides comfortably, can usually be found on a sticker on the driver-side doorjamb or in the glove-box.
  4. Premium is better than regular-grade fuel. False! Most vehicles run fine on regular-grade fuel. Using premium in a vehicle that doesn’t require it may actually decrease fuel mileage and promote carbon and deposit build-up in the valve train and combustion chamber, so you’re paying more in higher maintenance costs. Or, trying to save a few cents by using regular fuel in a vehicle designed for premium may cost you hundreds of dollars in engine damage.
  5. You don’t have to warm up your car before driving. True! Driving is actually the fastest way to warm up today’s engines. As it warms up, it then delivers the best mileage and performance.
