When it comes to your car battery, there are several things you can do to prevent a premature car battery replacement.  Take care of your car battery, and it will give you good service for many miles, saving you time and money.

Car Battery Maintenance Tips:

  1. Drive your vehicle -- Leaving your car in the garage or driveway for an extended period of time affects the battery’s charge.  Drive your vehicle on a regular basis to maintain the required level of charge.
  2. Regular engine service -- Poor engine condition can overload the battery and reduce its life.  Don’t procrastinate when it comes to the recommended engine service intervals.
  3. Check the charging rate – Check the charging rate at every major service. Under and over-charging a car battery reduces it lifespan, as well as voiding the warranty.
  4. Avoid draining the charge -- Leaving vehicle accessories on will discharge the battery. Constant recharging may shorten the life of your battery, resulting in a premature car battery replacement.
  5. Keep it clean -- Dirt and dampness can damage your battery case and may cause your battery to lose its charge.  Check and clean the case and terminals during every major service.
  6. Fasten it down -- Check that your battery is secure at all times, as vibrations can damage the battery plates. Inspect battery terminals regularly; loose connections can cause breakdowns.
  7. Avoid jump-starting --- In newer vehicles, attempting to jump-start a dead battery can damage the electronics.  Take your dead battery to an auto repair shop for assistance.

Note to remember:  Car batteries have a limited lifespan, so be sure to check them periodically.
