A regular schedule of basic car service not only will keep your vehicle operating more efficiently, increase driving safety, prolong its life, and save you time and money spent on a costly car repair, it also helps save the environment and our natural resources. It is a win-win situation!

Here are eight simple car service tips to get you started on the road to being an environmentally conscious driver:

  • Check tires. If tires are under-inflated or the wheels are out of alignment or have lost their balance, fuel efficiency will be significantly decreased as the engine has to work harder. Properly maintained tires will last longer, meaning fewer tires in the scrap pile.
  • Speed control. Miles per gallon is significantly decreased if you consistently drive over 55 or 60 mph. As much as possible, use cruise-control to keep a steady speed. Try to avoid fast accelerations and jerky stops.
  • Turn off the motor. Avoid excessive idling. With today's advanced automotive technology, those 10-minute warm-ups on cold mornings are no longer necessary for the motor.
  • Remove excess weight. Less weight means better mileage so take out unnecessary items and store them in the garage. Putting your luggage in the trunk rather than on a roof rack reduces drag.
  • Eliminate unnecessary driving. Consolidate your daily errands, join a car pool, and try to travel when traffic is light to avoid stop-and-go conditions.
  • A timely car tune up. A misfiring spark plug can reduce fuel efficiency as much as 30%. Follow the service schedules and replace filters and fluids as recommended in your owner's manual.
  • Keep a working A/C. Have your air conditioner serviced only by a technician certified to handle refrigerants. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, almost one third of the gases released into the atmosphere come from vehicle air conditioners.
  • Properly dispose of used parts. Many car repair shop are happy to dispose of used motor oil, anti-freeze, tires, and old batteries for you. Or call your city or county government for recycling sites.

Remember: Make sure that our environment and natural resources are safe for generations to come--operate your vehicle efficiently, maintain it regularly, and dispose of used parts properly.
