Accurate auto electrical diagnosis is one of the most difficult challenges to be found when working on today's automobiles. Considering the large number of systems that use electricity in order to operate, being able to quickly diagnose problems to perform the correct auto electrical repair can be a real asset. Whether you are having problems with an engine control issue, an automatic ride height system, or a power window issue, the auto electrical systems all utilize the same principles.

Often, auto electrical problems can be difficult to diagnose. You can help your mechanic determine first where to look for any problems, as well as recommend the appropriate auto electrical repair by following the two tips below:.

First, Verify the Problem --

This sounds simple, but can be challenging. You want to make sure the problem actually exists before you try to solve it. Occasionally a customer will think there is a problem when the circuit is actually performing as designed. Sometimes duplicating the problem can be the most challenging aspect of the diagnosis, especially if the auto electrical problem you are concerned with diagnosing is an intermittent problem. You can't diagnose what you can't see!

Information that is useful in duplicating the problem would include:

  • How often does the problem occur?
  • How long after the vehicle is started does the problem occur?
  • Does the problem occur only over bumps? If so, what kind of bumps?
  • Does weather (sunny, rainy, cold, hot) have any effect on it?
  • Does the car have to be idling, driving, in reverse, moving forward, be in gear, etc.?

Collecting as much information about exactly when the problem occurs will help your technician, to duplicate and confirm a problem. Try to be as exact as possible in collecting information. No detail is too small!

Second, determine Related Symptoms --

This serves to help you isolate which circuit, and which part of the circuit, has the problem that needs to be repaired. By identifying related symptoms you can often eliminate unnecessary diagnostic procedures. Knowing an approximate area in a circuit where the problem is gives your technician a definite direction in diagnostic testing.
