As the miles add up on our vehicles, it is normal that parts will start to wear out. Some drivers may start to wonder just how often should car shocks be replaced? Can you tell how fast they care wearing and do bad shocks affect the car axles? First, consider where you drive and how you drive! If you consistently drive over bumpy streets filled with potholes and gravel, your shocks and car axles will noticeably wear faster than normal.

As a conscientious driver, you should know the signs of bad shocks and how your car axles will be affected. Here are some noticeable signs to be aware of:

  • Your vehicle is harder to steer and control.
  • When turning or changing lanes, your car noticeably sways from one side or the other.
  • After hitting a bump or pothole, your car keeps on bouncing.
  • It takes longer for your car to come to a stop
  • When braking or accelerating, your vehicle's “nose dives” or “squats.”
  • Tire “cupping” occurs each time a tire hits the ground (rubber wearing off the tire).
  • You may notice hydraulic fluid from inside the shock leaking onto the car axles.

Don’t wait until you are completely broken down on the side of the road before having your suspension system, including the car axles, inspected by your trusted mechanic. The good thing is, if you have to end up replacing your car shocks, there are three major benefits:

  • Significant improvement in braking performance,
  • Increased control of your vehicle as the steering is more secure,
  • Damage to other components of the suspension system (such as the car axles)will be avoided.
