After winter's harsh temperatures and now the start of hot weather, your vehicle may seem a little noisier and more sluggish than normal. It's probably time for an oil change. Avoid unexpected engine problems by having an oil change as well as taking the time to have the other systems of your vehicle checked out before you head out on that summer road trip. Many auto shops offer oil change coupons to make regular oil changes more affordable so don't put if off any longer.

Facts to Know about Oil Change:

  • Regular intervals. Because oil thickens when it's cold outside, your motor oil may have lost some of its cooling efficiency. Summer's hot temperatures will cause the oil to get thinner, loosing even more of its cooling effectiveness for the motor. The best protection for your engine in extreme temperatures is with quality oil changes at the appropriate intervals.
  • Viscosity. Viscosity is measured using two numbers and a letter. For example, 10W-40; the first number (10) refers to the thickness at cold temperatures (0ºFahrenheit), and the second number refers to the thickness at high temperatures (212º Fahrenheit.) Make sure you are using the right oil viscosity for summer so that your engine is protected at all times.
  • • Types of oil. Your selection will depend on compatibility with your vehicle, the climate in which you live, and your budget.
    • Synthetic -- maintains a more consistent viscosity over a wide range of temperatures. It is more expensive and could be incompatible with certain older engines.
    • Synthetic blends -- a combination of both natural and synthetic, providing the benefits of synthetic without the higher cost.
    • Premium conventional – natural oil with a higher quality for increased levels of protection.

Keep your vehicle cool during summer's hot temperatures with regular oil changes. If questions about oil changes or other maintenance issues, check your owner's manual or ask your mechanic for guidance.
