If you’ve owned a vehicle for very long, you know that eventually, it will need some attention, such as oil changes, transmission flushes, new wiper blades, and the list goes on. While some of these issues are minor inconveniences, others can cause major problems if ignored, such as oil changes. Fortunately, there are some signs of a bad engine that will alert you to a needed engine repair before it is damaged beyond repair!

So what are the signs of a bad engine? Here are nine major issues that can occur:

  • Engine vibrates and shakes – this can be caused by bad spark plugs or worn-out hoses.
  • Smoke coming from the engine – this is an indication that there are serious problems in the engine.
  • The engine runs hot, and keeps overheating – the level of coolant may be too low, the water pump isn’t working properly, or the oil needs to be changed.
  • The engine is too noisy – this could be an indication of a bad catalytic converter, the muffler, broken gaskets, or worn-out seals.
  • Leaking fluids – if there are puddles of oil, coolant, or transmission fluid under your parked car, you may need to call a tow to the auto shop for an engine repair. Don’t operate your car if the fluid levels, especially oil, are too low.
  • The “Check Engine” light stays on – this light is a warning that there is an internal issue with your car. Schedule a diagnostic test at your auto shop as soon as possible to determine the cause of this little warning light.
  • Your car has lost power – this is an indication of major internal problems, not only with your engine but could be related to the transmission or other components.
  • Your car is using more fuel than usual – This is also an indication of an internal engine problem, although it could be a problem with the fuel system, the engine stroke, or a transmission problem.
  • Rough running engine – there could be internal clogging in the system or bad spark plugs.

Engine problems of any kind are critical and should not be ignored. Detecting problems early can save you a lot of time and money. If left unrepaired, you may be facing complete engine failure in the near future.
