Is your vehicle ready for the hot temperatures of summer on the way? Now is the time to take care of your car with a tune up! This will ensure that all the critical systems that keep your car running smooth are adjusted and cleaned.

So what does a full car tune up include, you wonder? Even though the type of tune up needed is based on the age of your vehicle and the number of miles driven, the basic tune up checklist is the same for most vehicles. The best place to look is your owner’s manual (or ask your trusted mechanic) for the manufacturer’s recommendations. A tune up checklist typically includes the following:

  • Replace bad spark plugs—Spark plugs in good condition should have light tan or gray insulator firing noses.
  • Clean fuel pump and filter—This allows the fuel pump to function efficiently.
  • Clean fuel injectors—If they are blocked by debris, the efficiency of the spark plugs is diminished and the amount of fuel delivered to the engine is restricted.
  • Replace air filter—The air filter should be replaced about once a year allowing the engine to get the air it needs to run properly.
  • Adjustment to engine timing—This will help your car idle more smoothly.
  • Clean PCV—This will help reduce the amount of toxic emissions from your vehicle.
  • Clean or replace points and condenser—Mainly found in older cars, these will need to be cleaned or replaced about every 20,000 miles.
  • Check operating systems—Check operating systems, such as brakes and suspension systems, to make sure they are functioning properly.
  • Check other components—Other components can cause problems, such as the oxygen sensor, distributor cap, oil, and coolant, which should be checked and replaced.

Remember: Even though you think your car is running just fine and is getting you from point A to point B, giving it a little extra attention with a full tune up will keep it reliable and trustworthy for many more miles!
