Does the term “transmission repair” cause you feelings of anxiety? The thought that something could be wrong with their transmission and the potential cost of a transmission repair can be daunting. The good news is that taking care of basic transmission service is relatively inexpensive and easy to schedule when compared to the alternative cost of a major transmission repair.

So what does a transmission service include? Generally, here is a list of what could be included in a transmission service:

  • For manual transmissions, the clutch pedal needs to be inspected and adjusted frequently.
  • Mechanics may recommend an inspection of the transmission fluid at least once a year for any vehicle. Depending on the condition of the fluid, it may only need to be topped off, or a complete flush of the transmission system may be needed.
  • The sump pump or pan will be inspected and cleaned.
  • The filter should be cleaned or replaced as needed.
  • The pan gasket should be replaced.

If a major transmission repair is pending, ask your mechanic about the following issues before any work is started:

  • Is the manufacturer’s warranty still good on your transmission? Does the auto shop have a warranty and will it cover both parts and labor, or just parts?
  • For an older car with lots of miles, is the value of the car worth the cost of the transmission repair?
  • Will the repair provide you with many more miles of trouble-free operation, or will it just buy you a little time before the next breakdown?
  • What are transmission repair options—varying in cost and longevity? For example, installing a brand-new transmission vs. a rebuilt or remanufactured transmission? Consider your budget and time when choosing the best option for you.

A word of advice:  Because transmission repair can be quite costly, be proactive by scheduling transmission service before you start noticing any problems, such as slipping gears, jerking while shifting, or an overheating transmission.
